Choose a Side
Throughout many years, the topic of immigration has been a substantial issue in America that has been overlooked. The issue regarding immigration is important to U.S. citizens because it can either make us or break us. Some positive things that amnesty could bring to America is diversity, manual labor and investment on things such as cars and houses. Immigrants also bring potential to America by contributing to the community, and providing potential dreamers in different fields. On the other hand, amnesty can bring negative consequences to the United States. The solution to the illegal immigrants population in the United States should be that amnesty should not be given to illegal immigrants because it would cost American taxpayers a fortune, it rewards bad behavior as well as overpopulate the United States.
Amnesty should not be given to illegal immigrants living in the United States because it would cost American taxpayers a fortune. In the Article “We Cannot Afford Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants” by Ed Butowsky he states, “Each illegal immigrant costs our country $24,000 a year. But, on average, each pays $10,000 in taxes, so it is reasonable to say that each illegal really adds $14,000 a year to our country’s debt burden” Our nation is already in debt, so granting amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants which will total out to a least 70 billion each year to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants which is not a good way to spend money (Butowsky). Granting amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants is not the best way to spend our money.
Secondly, granting amnesty to over 5 million illegal immigrants is rewarding bad behavior. law to enter this country illegally. In the article by John Hawkins he states, “It's against the law to buy fake documents or steal someone's social security number. It's against the law not to pay your taxes” If we are granting amnesty for illegal immigrants for committing such crime, we are hurting America as well as punishing the citizens that live America because we as citizens then have to deal with overpopulation, competitions, and higher taxes if we grant amnesty.
Lastly, granting amnesty to illegal immigrants will overpopulate the United States, thus having to spend more money to accommodate the U.S. citizens. If America grants amnesty to illegal immigrants, the citizens would potentially lose out on job opportunities, room for living and money. Decreasing the way of living to U.S. citizens to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants is wrong. We as Americans should not encourage this issue of amnesty for illegal immigrants because it will not serve any purpose toward our country.
Granting amnesty to over 5 million illegal immigrants would bring positive change for our country. Immigrants could bring a lot of good potential to our country such as intelligence, labor work and diversity. Illegal Immigrants can also help with the flow of currency by purchasing houses, cars, and other goods that will help better their lives. But logically speaking America is not financially nor physically ready to take on such challenge as to granting over 5 million illegal immigrants amnesty.
Overall granting amnesty for immigrants is not the best way to spend our money because we as Americans would just be wasting money to help encourage someone who committed a crime. In the article by Butowsky he states, “No matter how good you may feel about lifting our lamp beside the golden door, there's only one answer: No” (Butowsky 2). When speaking on the topic of amnesty we as Americans should not think emotionally about the topic, but logically.

In your first paragraph, you need to use the whole word United States when introducing its citizens. It's recommended to use the whole title of the article. It was also a little difficult to find any personal facts on the subject. Most of the facts were already presented in the article " We cannot afford amnesty for illegal immigrants. It is true that finding homes for these illegal aliens will cost money. Try to focus more on the crime rate that these immigrants have cost instead of the same excuses politicians have been cramming down our brains for over a decade.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great idea to incorporate both sides. However, adding paragraph five about the pros for amnesty felt thrown in. The side you choose was for no amnesty for illegal immigrants. However, there was no counter argument on the points you added for pros on amnesty. There needs to be a counter argument if your pursuing to have no amnesty for illegal immigrants. Possibly you could have explained what would have happened if amnesty was granted and how America would have even more problems besides money and overpopulation.

ReplyDeleteThere was plenty of useful evidence throughout the piece. It makes the argument more effective when using an outside source, like the John Hawkins article. It would not be a total waste of money to assist and change the lives of millions of immigrants. Yes, there are those that broke the law by entering the country illegally, and they should be held accountable, possibly with fines. But there are also a ton of immigrants here legally that work for an honest living and to help their families. Those people definitely deserve amnesty.
DeleteYou did a great job including evidence for both sides in your argument. As well as bringing your own thoughts in to it like claiming that they are criminals. Though you are technically right that they are breaking the law for stealing peoples documents and not paying taxes, but how can they pay taxes if they do not have any documents. One could counter argue with your claim by acknowledging that by amnestying immigrants they will now most likely pay taxes and not steal any ones document papers. Also, immigrants will happily pay taxes if it means to be part of this country legitimately. However, you are right it will cost the United States, but there is a point to all of this if not then this topic will not be as huge and delicate as it is. The point of all this is to gain money, and with a well planned strategy amnestying immigrants is possible.
ReplyDeleteYour did a good job incorporate the drawbacks of amnesty in your essay. Nevertheless, we can argue that your second paragraph's source is biased. Butowski article was published by Fox News, a news station that is known to be right wing supporters. If we look into Butowsky article, Butowsky gets his statistics from the Heritage Foundation which is another conservative group. He also doesn't have a counterargument in his article making him even more biased. You could have added a source to your counterargument to make it stronger, then refute it with an even stronger source. Other than that, you did a god job to illustrate the effects amnesty will do to the American population and the laws being broken.

ReplyDeleteThis argument is very superficial. Illegal immigration has, by all means, been an issues for many years and people have not found a solution yet. The post criticizes illegal immigration but doesn't offer a solution to stop it. It is stated that amnesty should not be granted because the new mass of citizens will overpopulate the country, increase the nation's burden, and potentially pose a threat to the validity of the law in the United States. Evidence for these reasons are not critically reasoned. We all know that illegal immigrants pay less taxes and cost more to sustain to the federal government, but the facts presented do not take into account the economicall inout of an amnesty when illegalimmigrats are forced to pay applications individually. That is a tremedous amount of money is all 11 millino undocumnet immigrants file. Also, migrating, ilegal to teh U.S is a crime, but it is a crime taht is conciouslly comited in a persuit of opportunities offered in American soil. Immigrants should not be punished for trying to survive and seek a better life for their families. Overpopulation has already happened in the United States. Illegal immigrants are already here and the country has not yet exploded or ran out of land fro living. Amnesty will only be eligible for those illegal immigrants that quality and that have reside in the country for some time, not fro new comers. Illegal immigration needs a solution not plain criticism. If many of these people posses "intelligence, work labor, and diversity" then the United State should keep them and offer a path to legalization to then unify the nation and work together to improve, advance, and continue to build a great country.
ReplyDeleteThis argument was contradicting itself. What was contradicting in your argument was when you stated that that giving immigrants amnesty would have some positive aspects "Granting amnesty to over 5 million illegal immigrants would bring positive change for our country. Immigrants could bring a lot of good potential to our country such as intelligence, labor work and diversity." Then you go on to state "granting amnesty for immigrants is not the best way to spend our money because we as Americans would just be wasting money." It kind of contradicts the whole thing. Also, even though Butosky is a financial advisor (so he would seem like he knows what he's talking about right?) he works for Fox News and as Alejandro Ibarra stated above they are known for being right wing supporters. I would not have added him as a source because he did not take into consideration the other side of the argument (plus his paper sounded really biased because he only focused on one side of the argument). Lastly, this argument needed more facts to back up what was stated.

ReplyDeletes very clear that that giving illegal immigrants amnesty would cost a lot of money. The problem here is that regardless of the cost, illegal immigrants have a great potential into bringing more job opportunities. Yes, there are about 5 million illegal immigrates who will be granted amnesty and those 5 million will make a greater impact for America. More facts should've been stated besides from Butosky article. Also, as stated above, illegal immigrants will gladly pay taxes.
ReplyDeleteYour arguement was very clear. Your examples in your argument were very clear. You provided many evidence in your argument. You should have provided more counter aruguments. You incorporated all the negative sides into giving amnesty to illegal immigrants. The argument overall was logic and acknowledgable.
ReplyDeleteFor a second it seemed as though you were for granting amnesty to illegal immigrants and it was then made clear in the second paragraph that you were not. The evidence you gave could've been followed by better support. It seemed as though you were only going off of what you were given to read as opposed to having an opinion and some reasoning of your own. It also seemed as if you just threw in the fifth paragraph because you had to give the opposing view, therefore it seemed as though you didn't put much thought into it. You could also improve on your transitions, it was a bit hard to know why things were there and for what. Besides that, your argument was clear in the end and the last sentence really wrapped the argument up nicely.
ReplyDeleteYour argument was clear and every strong you did provided both sides of the argument. One thing is that you did have more explanation and supporting evidence towards not granting amnesty to immigrants than you did on granting amnesty and the positive side. That was the weak part of your argument the last two paragraphs seemed that just were thrown in there without no supporting evidence and the ideas weren't expanded to their fullest.
ReplyDeleteNot all illegal immigrants have fake documents or steal peoples identities. Not condoning the idea, but look at the measures illegal immigrants have to go to just to want to be in this country. There willing to risk being in America with fake identities because there are so desperate to stay here. Granting Amnesty can lower that part of the crime and lower the risk of someones identity getting stolen if something could get solved with this Amnesty issue. Agreeably, it may seem as though we could possibly get over populated but Americans live comfortably enough here even though illegal immigrants are here. Americans and illegal immigrants have blended fine. If more undocumented immigrants start to come, then theres a who other issue and maybe population will become an issue. But were only dealing with giving amnesty to those that are here and again like i said the blend of both populations hasn't compromised anyones living.
